2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Zion Chapel finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Zion Chapel finished sixth in Class 2A region three with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Rebels have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Rebels last playoff victory came during the 1979 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Zion Chapel was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Rebels want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.1 points a game. Zion Chapel struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 43.5 points a game. The Rebels would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, the Zion Chapel football program has struggled with a record of 17-44. Over the past 25 seasons, Zion Chapel has not won much with a record of 69-179. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 2A and 356th in the AHSAA. The Rebels have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Bradley Bowers resigned in February as the head football coach at Zion Chapel. His three teams at the school found little success as they finished a combined 4-26. Bubba Nall will lead Zion Chapel as the new head football coach after two seasons as an assistant coach. This will be his third stint as a head coach having led Sweet Water in 1996-97 to a 13-9 record and Florala in 2013 to a 6-4 record. Coach Nall's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 19-13 (59.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Nall's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time and won one region championship. The Zion Chapel Rebels will play in Class 2A region three during the 2016 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Rebels if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season. After just 2 wins last year, Zion Chapel will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Rebels open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Houston County on Friday, August 26 at Greene Memorial Stadium. Last year the Houston County Lions finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in eighth place in Class 2A region two. Zion Chapel and Houston County have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 0-8-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2003 with Houston County winning by a score of 48-14. Zion Chapel returns 2A All-State Junior kicker Dawson Hamlin. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History
The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
